Called to Become like Him

It’s a pretty well known fact that we become like the people we hang around.

This is so obvious when I look at my kids and see in them a reflection of myself.  They are like a mirror showing me both the best and worst parts of myself.  They pick up on my language, my habits and even my anxieties, despite my hardest efforts to keep them hidden.

Sure, some of it is genetic, but I think a lot of it is learned.  They see everything that I do, they have learnt how to think and respond to situations from watching how I respond.  The more time they have spent with me, the more they have become like me.

My little children still think that their daddy and I are the best people in the whole wide world.  They can’t imagine wanting to be anything other than us.  One day they will discover that we have flaws.  No matter how hard we try, when they become parents they will decide to do things differently.  They will try and keep the positive things we taught them, and have to work through the negative.

Yet we know that there is one who is perfect.  Our father is the perfect role model.  As a child of his, spending time with him, I want to become more and more like him.  His strengths, his passions, his heart.  That is a part of being one of his children.  That is what becoming holy looks like.

Colossians 3:10 NLT Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.

I desire my heart to become more like that of Jesus.  I want everyone who sees what I do and how I live to be seeing Jesus in and through me.  That is a life that brings glory to God.

John 3:30 NLT – He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.

Romans 12:2 NLT – Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
